Field trial of PMD test methods and investigation into the dynamics of polarisation effects in a variety of installed cable environments.

The purpose of this field trial was to investigate whether changes in the state of polarisation (SOP) of light in installed cabling affected Polarisation Mode Dispersion (PMD) test methods.
The field trial compared the results obtained by six different PMD test systems, on four different routes, whilst simultaneously monitoring the SOP of light travelling along another fibre in the same cable.
This gave an emormous amount of data on the dynamics of polarisation effects in installed cabling that is now of interest to those developing 100Gb/s transmission systems that may use polarisation multiplexed QPSK with coherent detection.
