The Data Grid: Challenges for Astronomy in the Next Decade

In the next decade, data handling of astronomy instruments will require a new networking approach. Generating data amounts in the TB/day range, climbing to 100 TB/day for some instruments, it will be difficult to shuffle data around as we do today. How can we guarantee that scientists can fully take advantage of these data from their desktops? They want access to just about each byte of the data. They want to combine data from different facilities. In this contribution, I will present a few of the challenges facing new astronomy projects, and place them in the context of networking.
