Multicast on the GÉANT Network

Mariapaola Sorrentino (student at DANTE)

There is growing interest from the emerging users of GÉANT in the use of multicast for moving data. The performance and reliability of multicast transmissions over the GÉANT Network have been investigated at DANTE, UK, managing partner of the GÉANT network project, as part of a master thesis in Electronic Engineering for the University of Salerno, Italy. The poster will introduce the requirements and the advantages of multicast for data transmissions, the methodology followed to set up the testbed and to run the tests, together with the characterization of the nodes involved in the test. Measurements were made of the throughput, packet loss and inter-packet arrival times. These results will be presented and discussed.
