NG-PON for converged Access Networks

Klaus Grobe (ADVA AG Optical Networking)

We describe a converged access network approach for (large) corporate networks like NRENs. These networks must be efficient with regard to energy consumption and general OpEx, and must support all bit rates and protocols. This is provided by converging access and backhaul into a single platform which needs a minimized number of active sites. A generalized WDM-PON, together with integrated Layer-2 function, can cope with these requirements. It can support passive fan-out, high capacity, long reach up to 100km, and it also provides inherent security due to the physical wavelength separation. Key components for such a WDM-PON include tunable transceivers, flexibele resilience mechanisms, and integrated means for E2E monitoring and management.
