QoS aware semantic orchestration of CineGrid resources using workflow systems

The CineGrid [1] collaboration aims “to build an interdisciplinary community that is focused on the research, development, and demonstration of networked collaborative tools to enable the production, use and exchange of very-high-quality digital media over photonic networks”. At the SNE [2] group of the University of Amsterdam, we are prototyping a workflow based solution for Quality of Service (QoS) aware resources selection and allocation for delivering large quantity digital media within the CineGrid network. Based on semantic web technologies, the CineGrid Description Language (CDL) [3] is used to describe CineGrid resources and the services on these resources, and the Network Description Language (NDL) [4] is used to create a map of the logical and physical connections between resources. The workflow system discovers CineGrid resources and the optimal network paths between these resources from the semantic description based on the quality constraints derived from the user requirements. From the discovered candidates, the system generates the workflow for delivering digital media and adapt the execution of the workflow based on the real-time state of the network to control the global quality of the workflow execution. As test case will use a dynamic circuit switched network provided by SURFnet which connects four locations (UvA, SARA, De Waag, Filmacademie) in the Netherlands. We are developing all the necessary components to manipulate this network and its resources to provide efficient QoS aware ways to stream video using the CineGrid portal [5].
